San Francisco is one of those places in the U.S. that makes you feel like you are in another country. With rolling hills, panoramic ocean views, and the most iconic bridge in the world, it is a must see destination. One thing that stood out on my recent trip to San Francisco, California, was the stunning number of overlooks and view points the city has. Being an amateur photographer, I am always hunting for the best spots to capture the gorgeous views. Luckily, San Francisco is the perfect city to capture amazing views of the West Coast. Keep reading to find out where to go for the best views in San Francisco.

Lombard Street

Topping off the list at number one is Lombard Street. The view from the top of this road truly makes you feel like you are on top of the world. Lombard Street is one of the most famous scenic spots in San Fran. While it takes a lot of blood, sweat, and some tears to get to the top, the views are well worth the struggle. And- great news- if you aren’t able to physically hike to the top, there are a number of transportation options to get you there. So why make the trek?

For one, if you walk up Hyde Street, you will have a beautiful view of the bay, which includes the famous Alcatraz. In fact, I used this beautiful view as a crutch to take a break from the walk on my way up. Once you’re at the top, you can see the actual *famous* Lombard Street, which is a truly* winding road nestled into beautiful landscaping. Once you’re done taking in the views, the walk down isn’t nearly as difficult.

Pacific Heights

Pacific Heights is somewhat of a hidden gem. A neighborhood full of beautiful (and no doubt EXPENSIVE) homes, there is a cute park set between the houses with a beautiful (nearly 360) view of San Francisco. The best part of this spot is the walk back towards the Bay, which allows you to get up close to some gorgeous homes while you admire the ocean in the distance.

Baker Beach

Baker Beach is the place to go for an outstanding view of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco’s most iconic landmark. Not only do you get to take a stroll on the golden sands, but you can get some amazing photos as well. BONUS: The Baker Beach Sand Ladder. It’s exactly what it sounds like…a ladder…of sand…uphill…vertically. Now hear me out; yes, you will be winded, but the views are truly out of this world. See below. The Baker Beach Sand Ladder gives you a panoramic view of the ocean, bridge included. I would highly recommend this spot for a stunning sunset. If you continue your walk toward the bridge from the top of the sand ladder, you’ll get an even better view of the bridge. This was by far the best vantage point in San Francisco.

Pier 39

The iconic Pier 39 is not only one of the must see places on your San Fran trip, it has some pretty sweet fews of Alcatraz, SEA LIONS, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Do some shopping, have lunch, and sit by the dock of the Bay on Pier 39. This was a favorite activity on our trip to San Francisco. Watching the sea lions is probably the most entertaining thing you can do in SF. If they’re active, you can watch them swimming around, jumping onto barges, and jumping on each other. This makes for some great (and hilarious) photos.

Alamo Square Park (Painted Ladies)

If you’ve ever watched the popular sitcom ‘Full House’, you’ll definitely recognize the Painted Ladies from the opening credits. This famous row of classic San Fran homes sits opposite a rolling green park that gives you a great view of the city below. This is the perfect place to grab some lunch (hike, again), and chill out for the afternoon. There are plenty of shade spots to relax under.

BONUS: Boat Cruise for More Views

If you are feeling extra adventurous, take a sunset cruise on the Bay. This is probably the most up close and personal you will get to the Golden Gate, Alcatraz, and the Bay Bridge (apart from being physically on them). Our “Twilight California” boat cruise was booked through Red, White, and Blue Cruises, and left us with some outstanding photos and views. You will also get a “dolphin’s eye view” of the city. In particular, Ghirardelli Square. The city looks amazing lit up at night. I would highly recommend this add on for your San Francisco adventure.
